Privacy Policy
ReadQR (readqr.app and the ReadQR app) · Effective 16 September 2026
The short version: everything happens on your device. Camera frames and images you open are decoded locally and never uploaded anywhere. ReadQR has no accounts, no advertising identifiers and no tracking scripts, and does not collect, store or share any personal data. Visits to readqr.app are counted on our own server, without cookies and without storing your IP address. The only other thing the app ever sends is an anonymous crash report if something breaks — never your codes or images.
Camera
ReadQR asks for camera access for one purpose only: finding QR codes in the live picture. Frames are processed in real time on your device and immediately discarded. Nothing is recorded, saved or transmitted. You can also use ReadQR without a camera by opening an image — that image is processed the same way, locally.
What we collect
The contents of the QR codes you scan — and the codes you create — stay on your device and are not sent to us or to anyone else. There are no accounts and no advertising identifiers.
Visit counting
We count how many people open readqr.app, because otherwise we would have no idea whether anyone uses it. This runs on our server: no cookies are set and no tracking script runs in your browser. For each page opened we record the page address, the country the request came from, the site you followed a link from, if any, and a short code standing in for the visitor.
That code is a one-way hash of your IP address and browser type mixed with a secret that changes every day. Your IP address itself is never stored, the hash cannot be turned back into it, and because the secret changes daily, visits made on different days cannot be linked together. It tells us how many people came today — not who they are, and not what they did before.
Crash reports
If the app or the site hits an internal error, it sends a short technical report to our own error-tracking server: the error message, a stack trace, the app version, browser type and page address. At most a few reports per session. These exist purely so we can fix bugs; they are not linked to you, never contain the contents of your codes, images or camera frames, are not shared with anyone and are cleaned up automatically.
What stays on your device
A couple of settings — your interface language and scanner tuning parameters — are kept in local storage on your device. They never leave it, and clearing the app’s data removes them.
Links you open
When you choose to open a link, address or location found in a QR code, it opens in your browser or maps app. From that point the destination’s own privacy policy applies — ReadQR shows you the full destination before you open it precisely so you can decide.
The website
readqr.app is static and served by Cloudflare. It runs no third-party analytics and no tracking scripts — only the server-side visit counting described above. As with any website, the hosting infrastructure processes standard technical request data (such as IP addresses) to deliver the page and protect against abuse.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at readqr.app/privacy with a new effective date.
